What is Google Trends?Google Trends

A search engine company called Google Inc. created a software called Google Trends, to show the recent events that are happening. It was launched on May 11th, 2006. Then, on August 5th, 2008 a similar program called Google Insights for Search launched. Subsequently a few years later on September 27th, 2012, Google merged the Insight to now known as Google Trends. What Google Trend is a public web facility for Google. According to Google Inc, it has real-time updates on trends that happen in the world. It gives the users a fresh update on the current events that are happening around the world. They have their way of processing the data to a number of the most important trend to the least important. In fact, they use a five-word search that allows them to piece together so that they can find the breaking story. In addition, they also use a graph about that searches on hot the topics.

Google Trends also has loads of categories like business, sports, health, and more. Along with that, it has features to view what is trending in other countries as well. What’s so great about Google Trend is that not only it has trends that are current, but it has trended from the past. This allows users to know the recent events that are happening around the world. This eliminates the use of watching the news and waiting for it to it come up. Also, Google trends have features that show data that is relevant to us. For example, mother’s day is coming up soon this weekend when I am writing this paper. So Google trends go the extra step to show what is better for their mother, a brunch or flowers.

The Purpose of Google Trends

According to searchenginewatch.com, there are many different purposes for Google Trends, one of the main purposes is that people can see how interests are spiking/changing. There are 4 different ways you can search on google trends: web search, worldwide, time, categories. These parameters can be edited so that people can be specific about what they’re looking for. An example of this would be if someone from a company wanted to check the interest on a product of theirs. They could search the product name and see how the interest in that product is doing. The interest could be spiking or going down and the company would be able to know. The company could then change things about the product and see how it affects the interest. They also can compare the interest to the product with their sales and see how they can affect both.

Google Trends can also use by public figures who want to know how announcements they’ve made have affected the interest in them. An example of this right now would be that Ariana Grande and Mac Miller broke up yesterday. As of last night at 8 PM, the interest in those names sparked too much higher than the normal. Now if they broke up to spark interest and to get their names in the news, which is common in Hollywood. They could use Google Trends to check and see how much they sparked. Then they could match that with their sales and see how much they spiked. There are many other instances that this could be used in, and is used in. These examples were just to demonstrate the purpose of Google Trends.

Type of Trends on Google Trends

Based off of trends.google.com, as talked about in the previous paragraph, Google Trends has 4 main parameters for looking. These 4 parameters are web search, location, time, and individual categories. The web search is a search bar at the top of Google Trends that you can type whatever you want in. It will then show you the interest on that search term and how it is changing. The location helps you narrow your search to certain places, like countries or states. You can also put certain countries and it will show you the most popular things in that country. This can be used to see what important things are happening in other countries.

The next parameter is time, this will show you the most popular searches over a certain time interval. It can also show you at a certain time. You can use this by going to Top Charts and checking by year. You will be shown the most popular searches from many categories from that year. The final parameter is categories, this is just a tab that you can click on that will show a bunch of categories. If you click on these categories it will show you what things in those categories are spiking. For example, if you go to categories and click on business you will see the most popular/trending stories. As of right now, in the US, the most popular story is about a Boston Dynamics robot. These are the main types of trends on Google Trends.

How are the trends found?

There are a lot of different types of trends that are on Google trends. It has a lot of different and categories and different ways that they represent these data. They use graphs, tables, and more to present the data that they collect. According to ‘whatis.techtarget.com’, the way that Google gets their trend is that they use their own search engine to see how much it was searched. What they do is they take five words that were searched the most for the search engine and piece them together. Which allows them to see which stories they are trying to look for out of the recent ones. For example, Mexico national football team, ‪Rafael Márquez, ‪2018 FIFA World Cup, ‪Juan Carlos Osorio, and ‪Javier Hernández was searched most often in the last three hours. When these five words are pieced together it comes out to the Mexican soccer team roster release.

Another way that they find the trends is by using the traffic on other websites. According to ‘searchenginewatch.com’, this allows them to create columns like “Also visited” and “Also searched for”. What they do is, instead of looking at the traffic on that specific word they look at the words related. This divides the data into percentages of visitors from a specific geographical region and a crucial feature is how the data is presented on maps. This is called a “Geo-Targeting”. For example, it has data on the Trump administration and which countries have an interest in them. This data is also presented by states as well and some in counties as well. Showing the descriptive and the in-depth analysis of the trends geographically.

Finally, Google Trends can be a great tool to jump on board and write a great article on a current topic being searched. This no doubt will be beneficial for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and online marketing.
