Cryptocurrency has been in the media a lot. This technology has been growing and becoming more popular with each passing day. Cryptocurrency, a virtual currency that uses cryptography for security, was initially made public in 2009 when the group/individual, Satoshi Nakamoto, launched BitCoin. This virtual currency has been used for purchasing a Porsche, renting a hotel room to even buying a delivery pizza.

According to Investopedia Academy’s video, “Cryptocurrency for Beginners,” ten thousand dollars of bitcoin in 2012 is equivalent to twenty-seven million dollars of U.S. currency today! One bitcoin today is worth $6,722.07 (June 2018) U.S. dollars! The currency did reach its high of over $20,000 earlier in 2018.

Cryptocurrency gets its name because the consensus-keeping process is secured by strong cryptography, which is secured algorithmically (not secured by people or by trust). It is more likely that a shooting star hit your backyard than a bitcoin address being compromised.

After all, the simplest way to define this virtual asset is that cryptocurrency is defined as limited entries in a database. No one can change without fulfilling specific conditions. Although it may seem like a basic idea, that is precisely how you would want the currency to be. Similar to the “physical money” in your bank account, all of this information is nothing more than entries in a database that can only be changed under specific conditions.

Bitcoin

Bitcoin currency is held through a network of peers. There is a complete history of every account’s transactions and balances. For example, say, “Johnny gave 45 Bitcoin to Ronnie”, and Johnny’s private key will sign it. After the transaction is signed, it will be broadcasted on the network and sent to all the peers.

A thing to note is that confirmation is critical in cryptocurrency. As a transaction is unconfirmed and pending, there is a chance that it can be forged. The transaction will be complete when confirmed, meaning it is no longer forgeable. This cannot be reversed, and it becomes another historical transaction record. Another is Blockchain.

Now, you may be asking who confirms the transactions. Is it a computer system? Is it a single person? Well, the job of securing transactions belongs to ‘miners.’ They receive and take trades, stamp them as accurate and release them into the network. Hence leading to its recording on every node’s database. This process leads to the transactions becoming a part of the Blockchain. Since miners are essential to the cryptocurrency system, they are rewarded with a virtual currency token.

Con’s

Once the transaction is confirmed, there is no way it can be reversed. Overall, neither the miner nor the POTUS nor Satoshi can reverse the transaction back to you. If you bought Bitcoin, there is no way the currency will get back to the original owner. Yet, a con is if you sent your funds to a scammer or hacker that later steals from your computer, then there is no way to refund that money. Hence there is nothing to fall back on.

There is no safety net, and none of the transactions or accounts are connected to your real-life identity. You are assigned an address, approximately 30-character chain, where your Bitcoin, for example, will be sent to. There is no connection between your real-life address and this 30-character chain.

Confirmation of transactions is done in minutes and can be instant. They are happening on a global network around the world. Hence it doesn’t matter if I send my cryptocurrency across the nation, to my neighbor, or across the globe. A bitcoin address is highly secure. The virtual currency is locked in a public key cryptocurrency of solid cryptography and huge numbers; only the private key owner can send the currency.

The software is free. There is no need to ask for special permission from the owner or other users. Once the software is downloaded, you can buy, sell, or transfer cryptocurrencies.

Investing

One of the best ways of purchasing cryptocurrency is through CoinBase, which not only supports Bitcoin. CoinBase is easy to use and widely trusted, but it occasionally goes offline due to excessive website traffic. But other virtual assets like Bitcoin Cash, Ether, and Litecoin are available.

According to Lifehacker’s website post, “How to buy Cryptocurrency,” “You can download the Coinbase app on your phone or create an account at coinbase.com. Agree to the terms, and you’ll be greeted by a chart showing the recent rise and fall of Bitcoin and other currencies.

You’ll need to add a way to make purchases by tapping the “Buy” button on the app or clicking the Buy/Sell tab on the website. Subsequently, you can connect a debit or credit card for small investments or add a direct line to your bank account for larger purchases and sales that may take 4-5 days to process.”

Other websites include Kraken, which supports Bitcoin and Ether. However, Bitcoin’s success launched other cryptocurrency assets. For example, Litecoin, Namecoin, and PPCoin. There are still a few drawbacks to virtual currency. Cryptocurrency is relevantly new and a little challenging to understand. 

Similar to the housing crisis/situation in big cities like Seattle, the demand for cryptocurrency skyrocketed in early 2018 and crashed after that. Another critical point is that more companies and businesses are beginning to accept and use cryptocurrency. One might have certain features that the other does not, and vice-versa. There are many available online.

Blockchain can be viewed as google docs. Unlike a Word Document, if you send it to someone else, you will not be able to view it until they send it back.  On the contrary Google, docs allow you to collaborate and can see the document and its changes. Thus the difference between a database and a blockchain.

Some benefits of this concept are that it cannot be controlled by one entity and has no chance of failure. The blockchain checks itself every ten-minute interval. These intervals are called “blocks, ” where it gets part of its name. Thus Cryptocurrencies use blockchain technology. Also, this is one primary reason why it is so efficient and favored by users.

To sum it up, cryptocurrency is limited entries in a database that cannot be changed without specific conditions. One of the most well-known cryptocurrencies is Bitcoin. But there are plenty of others with different features and aspects. For example, the three types mentioned are currency, utility, and app/platform.
